Awful product: Syoss Heat Protecting Spray

I bought this heat protecting spray about a week ago, hoping this would be a dupe of the Tressemé spray which I bought and loved in Canada. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take that back with me to Switzerland because my suitcase was too full, but the design and appearance of this Syoss spray had me hoping it would work instead. Similarly as the Tressemé, this one can be purchased at drugstores and is inexpensive, and has the same convenient spray head.

Oh how wrong I was! As soon as I sprayed it the first time, the smell of alcohol overwhelmed me. I hadn't bothered to read the ingredients, but discovered that indeed the second ingredient is alcohol! What the hell?! How on earth is that supposed to protect your hair from heat damage? If I wanted to dry my hair out, I'd just spray alcohol on it! This does absolutely nothing like the Tresemmé spray, the latter of which is very nice and works like a leave-in conditioner. This is just awful!! My hair felt dry and crunchy after using this. Alcohol in a product that is supposed to protect your hair is just wrong. Schwarzkopf, hang your head in shame.

Another product that will be dumped down the drain. It wasn't expensive, but still, what a waste of money. The bottle is convenient though so I might just make my own leave-in spray using some of my L'Oreal Professionel conditioner diluted with water.

If you're interested in knowing what hair products I actually do like, check out my latest video below.

What's a really bad product you've tried lately? Leave a comment!

  2. I bought L'Oreal Eye Defense cream, which claims to help reduce puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles. I used it religiously for a few months, and to my disappointment I saw absolutely zero results. It didn't even moisturize that well. Complete waste of money.

Hi! I bought the shampoo, used it once, and never again. Here in Holland, there are a lot of commercials about this brand, and they all say how great it is and so on. But it is definately NOT! It smells weird too. It's just SH#T!

  5. Have you heard of any products that are really good for thick, textured, curly hair? I always joke that I have Hermione Granger hair from Harry Potter. As it get more and more humid in the summer, it just frizzes out no matter what I do.

  6. That happened to me with the Garnier Fructis Bamboo Flexihold Hairspray... It was supposed to make the hair "bouncy" but it dried it out and instead of making my hair frizz free... WRONG!!! I'm going to trow that can away because that product was horrible...

  9. Had the Syoss shampoo for dry hair, and it was ok, nothing too exiting tho. Had worse ones...
Also got the spray-on conditioner for dry/damaged hair, that's supposed to give your hair shine. Didn't notice ANY effect :/
Only plus about Syoss products - they're pretty cheap. But as you said - it's still a waste of money :|

Ooooo I hate Chi's Iron Guard spray. It smells heavily perfumed and it's just sickening. I agree though, Tresemme's one is fantastic!! I found that Guardian Angel by got2b isn't that bad though. It's definitely not Tresemme, but it's better than nothing!

  11. Most conditioners are cetyl alcohol based, so if that was the case then this product is perfectly normal. However, if it's just regular ol' isopropyl then that's another story. But, don't be too scared of alcohol in hair treatments because most conditioners have them. Cetyl is apparently supposed to be good for your hair.

hi...I have a question.I come from Greece and only recently the Syoss hair products line was introduced here.I bought the shampoo and conditioner and it was ok I guess...although it didn't really do anything amazing to my hair.I have very very dry curled hair and every shampoo I use is either too light or too heavy...the syoss is heavy I guess.are there any products beside the ones on the video you can recommend Julia...you see I have a LOT of hair.really.so are there any affordable products that actually do good?thnx a lot...Christina,Athens

  17. I also had got the same experience with this syoss spray. I hate it. Thought that this could be a dupe for the tressemé everybody was talking about on youtube. This is unfortunately, like you told, not available in switzerland. Well, will have to come along with my kerastase fluid :-(

John Frieda's Weather Works by Frizz-Ease was recommended to me. I live in Florida and the humidity makes my curly/wavy hair frizzy. I tried the Weather-Proofing Daily conditioner and it made my hair dry. Like, totally stripping it of moisture. Ugh! And I have dry hair to begin with.

I used Schwarzkopt shampoo and conditoners for a while here in Australia and they were awful, they completely dried out my hair, made my hair break and gave me dandruff and an itchy scalp. I have now switched to Matrix products which are quite expensive, but I have seen massive improvement.

Sorry, cannot say the same. Am quite happy with Syoss, especially the heat protecting spray. Alcohol is a basic ingredient of most of these products. There are so many on the market, and as we all have a different hair structure we have a huge choice to find the one product that suits our hair the best.

  27. I feel like you're describing a completely different product than the one I have. I'm using Syoss shampoo and conditioner for brittle/unshiny hair, and I'm planning to stick to it. It's perfect for me. I can say the same about the color-protecting mask, also from Syoss.

I have the heat protection spray too and it works well with a blow dryer.

Having said that, I like Syoss a lot.

I hate their shampoos, my Mum bought one loong time ago, and it was so loaded with silicones that after a few weeks of using my hair looked greasy after washing. -.- and my hair wasn't even sensitive to silicones to begin with, I could put biosilk in it all the time and it was fine. Now everytime I use anything containing more than a little silicone my hair looks horrible. That's why I don't like the brand. It's cheap, yes, but I'd rather not heal my hair from what they do for so long again.

I LOVE the Tresseme Heat protectant. So much so that I will probably try the shampoo and conditioner as well. I think cheap products that work great are really rare; just happened to totally luck out with Tresseme!!

  31. Hi Julia!!
I looooove the smell of the Tressemme Heat Protectant!! Don't they sell it in Switzerland?? They do here in Spain, so if you want me to send you a bottle, I will be pleased!!

Thank you SO MUCH for recommending the shampoo from La-Roche Posay. I bought it after watching your video, and even though I've washed my hair with it a mere two times, I happily discovered it works miracles! No more flaking going on in my hair. I'm so happy!! Finally, a product that works, and fast!

Again... thanks a million! That was really helpful! Bless you, Julia!

CHI heat protectant is the same way :/ it smells like cologne and probably is at fault for drying out my ends...

  34. Oh dammit, I just bought the Syoss spray! Haven't tried it though, and since I just washed my hair, I'll give it a try. I did smell it before I bought it, but I didn't think there would be any alcohol involved... Dang it, I really wanted a heat protection spray... Can I buy the Tresemme one in Belgium?

I just have to say something:
The Shampoo for Volume from SYOSS is the BEST thing that happened to me since grade 7 when my hair started being really oily. As of the first time I used it, my hair was just as freshly washed even after 3 days!!! I use it in combination with Schwarzkopf Tonic for activating hair roots and I have never ever been this happy about my hair!

Oh that is terribly unfortunate! I cringed when I read "alcohol".

I do agree with you on TRESemmé. It's one of my favorite brands for hair products. I haven't had a chance to try out the heat spray yet but I do own the Thermal Creations Straightening Gel. I bought it... oh, probably six months ago and I use it nearly everyday and I still have some left! It's wonderful. And it has also straightened out my hair. I usually have wavy hair but since I've started using the gel it's straightened my hair out and when I blow dry it (without the gel) my hair is nearly completely straight. It's... amazing.

And it protects my hair from heat damage too. It's like a wonder-gel.

I do hope you have better luck finding another possibly dupe (or maybe even getting the real deal!) or creating your own concoction!

  39. I'm so glad I've read your review! I've just run out of the Tresseme heat protector and was going to buy the Syoss as Tresseme is not available in my country (Slovakia). Hmmm definitely need to search for a different product now...
